Saturday morning of the 30th April saw our first photography walkshop outside Portsmouth, with a walk around East Head, the huge sand bank and series of sand dunes jutting off of the westerly edge of West Wittering beach as it opens up to Chichester Harbour. This is easily one of the most naturally beautiful beach locations where at low tide the shallow sandbank goes right out to the harbour water and the windswept dunes are perfect for exploring before discovering the rich green easterly edge lined with salt marsh and shallow water channels.
With this walk timed for the low tide, we started out on the sand bank, capturing the different textures and reflections before photographing the iconic line of posts, the most recognisable photographic landmark of East Head. These posts were great for working on different focusing and composition techniques. From there we photographed the wide open sand bank with a big, atmospheric sky and a busy harbour packed with boats and a water’s edge with walkers and their dogs. We then made our way up to the sand dunes, looking at leading lines, foreground and background, textures and more, as well as catching sandwich terns feeding and a kestrel hunting and hovering.
The northerly edge of East Head becomes shingle and is a popular spot for boats to ground out at low tide and the crew knock up a BBQ or picnic. We looked at natural framing through masts and directional flow in compositions before making our way back down the eastern edge, watching dogs leap in to the low tide channel. As alway, East Head absolutely delivers as one of the best photography locations on the south coast.
The next photo walkshops are on the 28th May with a morning walk at Farlington Marshes from 10am to 12pm (bookable HERE) and then at Lee on the Solent beach in the afternoon from 2pm to 4pm (bookable HERE).
